Mark Edward Soper is president of Select Systems and Associates, Inc., a technical writing and training organization. Mark is a 23-year veteran of the technology field, with an extensive background in training, technical book and magazine writing, technical editing, online content development, and research. Email Mark at mark@markesoper.com.

Mark first began to work with PCs in the days of the original IBM PC, PC-XT, and PC compatibles. Mark provided sales, sales support, and technical training for these computers, as well as for Atari, TI, Commodore 64, and CP/M based systems for various retailers in Evansville, Indiana, from 1983 to 1989. Mark found the early editions of Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing PCs a great help in both developing technical expertise and in seeing the potential to reach a larger audience by sharing that expertise in print.

Mark began his career as a technical author by writing a computer column for a local business magazine in 1988. His first breakthrough on the national scene began in 1990, when he began to write a series of articles on WordPerfect tips, tricks, and techniques for WordPerfect Magazine and The WordPerfectionist. Some of these articles involved printing issues, reflecting his long-time interest in the relationship between hardware and software.

After starting Select Systems and Associates in 1989, Mark provided training and technical services for various local and national clients in media, government, and industry. Mark continued to build his troubleshooting skills and credentials by teaching computer troubleshooting and other training classes to thousands of students from Maine to Hawaii from mid-1992 through early 1999, under contract to a New Jerseybased training company. During many of these trips, he continued to write magazine articles for publications such as PCToday, PCNovice, and SmartComputing on topics such as the Internet, hardware upgrades, and Windows 98 and 2000. Mark also wrote three book-length training manuals for another New Jerseybased training company in 1993, as well as shorter training manuals for various clients.

Mark has the distinction of having worked with some of the most famous authors and personalities in the technology field on various book projects, including Scott Mueller, Patrick Norton, and Leo Laporte.

In late 1998, Mark contacted Scott Mueller, dean of computer hardware authors, and began a long association, resulting in this book and many others. Mark has assisted Scott with his classic Upgrading and Repairing PCs series, published by Que, since the 11th edition up through the current 16th edition. Mark also provided some chapters for Upgrading and Repairing Networks, 2nd edition, and was a contributor to Upgrading and Repairing Laptops. Mark and Scott have also co-authored Upgrading and Repairing PCs: Technician's Portable Reference (1st and 2nd editions), Upgrading and Repairing PCs: Field Guide (the latest version of the Technician's Portable Reference), and Upgrading and Repairing PCs: A+ Certification Study Guide, 2nd edition, which covers the 2001 versions of the A+ Certification exams for entry-level hardware technicians. Mark also assists Scott with www.upgradingandrepairingpcs.com, the official website for the book series.

Since earning his A+ and Microsoft Certified Professional certifications in 1999, Mark has continued to work on many hardware and Windows book projects. He has been a contributor to five books in Que's Special Edition Using Windows series, including Special Edition Using Windows Millennium; Special Edition Using Windows XP Home Edition; Special Edition Using Windows XP Home Edition, Bestseller Edition; Special Edition Using Windows XP Professional; and Special Edition Using Windows XP Professional, Bestseller Edition. In addition to revising a number of chapters for each book, Mark's 30+ years of experience with photography and his experience with creating digital archives for several historic photo collections held by area libraries helped him write the brand-new imaging chapters for these books. Mark is also a contributor to Windows XP Platinum Edition.

In 2000 and 2001, Mark wrote two books on broadband Internet: Complete Idiot's Guide to High-Speed Internet Connections (2000), an overview of all types of broadband, and Absolute Beginner's Guide to Cable Internet Connections (2001), which focuses on cable modembased services.

In mid-2001, Mark co-authored one of the first books in the TechTV series, TechTV's Upgrading Your PC, with Patrick Norton. Mark wrote PC Help Desk in a Book in 2003 and was the sole author of TechTV's Upgrading Your PC, 2nd edition, in late 2003.

Mark revisited the A+ Certification topic with his book Absolute Beginner's Guide to A+ Certification, published in February 2004 as a comprehensive study guide for the November 2003 revisions of the A+ Certification Operating Systems and Core Hardware exams. It features quick-reference tables for major topics, extensive illustrations, and detailed coverage of all Windows versions from Windows NT 4.0 through Windows XP. The companion CD features hands-on labs, a Windows command reference, additional book chapters, and a hardware supplement.

2004 was a busy year for Mark. In addition to his A+ Certification book, Mark also wrote Easy Digital Cameras, a visual hands-on guide to digital photography, featuring three popular brands of digital cameras, and Absolute Beginner's Guide to Home Networking, which covers business, educational, home control, and recreational uses for home networks, with added emphasis on security and non-PC home networking devices.

In 2005, Mark followed up his home networking book with Absolute Beginner's Guide to Home Automation, which shows how to control your home's lights, electronics, HVAC, and security at home and remotely through X10-compatible home control hardware from a variety of vendors. Mark also teamed up with another technology book and media veteran, Leo Laporte, to produce a new and improved edition of Mark's PC Help Desk in a Book. The new edition, Leo Laporte's PC Help Desk, published in the fall of 2005, puts Mark's and Leo's years of computer and technology experience into an easy-to-use self-diagnostic form. Symptom tables, flowcharts, and write-ups about major hardware, software, and firmware subsystems help solve computer, peripheral, and imaging device problems quickly.

In addition to book projects, Mark has also worked with ReviewNet (www.reviewnet.net/authgallery/authgall-soper.html), a leading screener of IT personnel for employers, to develop questions for hardware tech interviews. Mark has also written several articles for MaximumPC magazine, on topics such as memory technologies, BIOS tweaking, Linux for Windows users, and 64-bit Windows. Some of this material was later adapted for the books Maximum PC Ultimate PC Performance Guide and Maximum PC Guide to Building a Dream PC (published by Que). Mark is also an author for Skywire Software (www.skywiresoftware.com), a leading provider of online knowledge management and help desk services.

Mark is a graduate of Olivet Nazarene University, Bourbonnais, IL, where he graduated summa cum laude with a dual major in English and history. He has been a serious amateur photographer since 1971, and he has a growing collection of railroad and transportation photos, timetables, and other documents waiting for his attention.
