Installing a New UPS

The process of installing a new UPS on a server involves several steps. You can use the following list as a general guide to the process, in conjunction with the documentation provided by your UPS vendor:

1.

Connect the battery Many UPS units are shipped with the battery disconnected from the unit. To connect an internal battery, open the unit and connect the cables as directed in the documentation. To connect additional batteries, look for the external battery connector on the base unit and connect the additional battery to it. Each additional battery includes a connector for another battery pack, enabling you to daisy-chain the batteries.

2.

Install the network management card or management cable (serial or USB) If the UPS unit will be managed remotely, install the network management card or connect the unit to a network cable. If the unit will be managed from the server, connect the USB or serial cable to the appropriate port on the unit and to the server. Note that the serial cable (if used) must be specially designed for use with the UPS.

3.

Connect the UPS unit to AC Connect the UPS unit to AC and verify that the unit is charging. Signal lights on the front of the unit indicate the status of the unit.

4.

Turn on unit after charging is complete When the signal lights indicate that the unit's battery (or batteries) is completely charged, turn on the unit.

5.

Connect the unit to the server If you opted in step 2 to manage the unit at the server, connect the USB or serial cable from the UPS unit to the server. If you use USB, you can hot-plug the cable. If you use the serial cable, you should shut down the server, plug in the serial cable, and restart the server.

6.

Install the drivers provided with the UPS Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003 automatically detect a USB-based UPS unit. Provide the driver disk or CD when prompted to complete installation. For serial port units, see the documentation provided with the UPS unit.

7.

Configure the server to manage the UPS With Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003, you can use the UPS tab in the Power (or Power Options, in Windows Server 2003) properties sheet in the Control Panel to manage APC and other third-party UPS units that use the serial port. However, the UPS service does not work with USB-based UPS services. In such cases, use the software provided by the vendor instead. Use vendor-provided software if you use other server operating systems.

8.

Install vendor-provided software on the client PC If the UPS unit is managed over the network, install vendor-provided software on the client PC that will be used for UPS management.

9.

Log in to unit via the network View the default settings. If they are suitable, keep them. Otherwise, configure the unit as desired and record the configuration.
