Social Entrepreneurship: Innovative Applications of Technology

Philanthropic efforts of the past in India are being surpassed today by less ambitious, but far more precisely defined efforts of successful industry corporations and non-governmental entrepreneurs. The tremendous potential for technological applications in a developing country like India is thus leading to very distinct humanitarian efforts by large and successful corporations.

India's most successful software firms like Infosys and Wipro have created individual funds for delivering the right amount of difference to the right beneficiaries. While the Azim Premji Foundation for Wipro emphasizes universal elementary education, the Infosys Foundation focuses more on diversified areas such as healthcare and education.

These charitable efforts have brought a result-oriented corporate discipline to the art of giving by demanding direct and measurable returns on investments. There is a multipronged effort to address the digital divide both across sectors and across the uses of technology. Due to the lack of widespread implementation of technology, there is a great potential for the use of existing technologies for wealth creation demonstrated by the Digital Equalizer [6] (DE) project, where centers provide disadvantaged children with digital access to educational content.
