While the rest of the countries profiled in this book are in the top 25 nations for competitiveness, India represents the developing world with a competitiveness ranking of 41 in the 2001 World Competitiveness Overall Scoreboard (see Table 17-1).

With the problems of poverty and underdeveloped infrastructure, the status of "developing nation" can bring with it the advantage of a thirst for prosperity based in deep-rooted values of hard work and reverence for knowledge, a particularly valuable characteristic for the Indian people in the global Innovation Economy.
