Chapter 10: Working with the Solaris Network Environment

Overview

We are living in the dawn of the information age brought about by the Internet. Computing and communication technologies have been developing separately for decades. The unification of the two has started the information revolution, and at the center of this is the Internet: the global robust communication system being used by hundreds of millions of people around the world. Communication means exchanging data, and data lives on file systems (including databases) supported by operating systems such as Solaris. This is how important it is for a system administrator to learn how the Internet, or TCP/IP networking, works.

In order to make this chapter self contained we have covered the basic terms and concepts in networking that are required to enable you to start managing the Solaris networking environment. Your Solaris machine, like any other machine, is connected to the network through a network interface, which would need to be configured. Why does a machine become a part of the network (by using interfaces)? Well, to share resources, and the resources are offered in the form of services.

The core question in this chapter is: how do you get started with the Solaris networking environment? In search of an answer, we will explore three thought streams: understanding network fundamentals, managing network interfaces, and managing network services.
