Installation Requirements and Options

q  

Solaris 10 supports SPARC-based and x86-based platforms.

q  

Various installation methods are available to support several installation circumstances, such as local or remote installation, installation of single or multiple systems, upgrade or installation from scratch, and installation in which the current configuration is maintained.

q  

Three installation display options are available: console-based text only; console-based windows; and GUI with windows, pull-down menus, scroll bars, buttons, and icons.

q  

When you install Solaris, you install one of the six available software groups: reduced network support, core system support, end user support, developer support, entire support, and entire plus OEM support.

Performing Installation

q  

You can install Solaris 10 on a SPARC machine from the installation CD or DVD. :

q  

You can install it on an x86 machine from the installation CD, DVD, or diskette.

q  

For an installation on an x86 machine, you must make sure that the BIOS supports booting from CD or DVD, and you must make the appropriate BIOS boot setting when the machine is turned on.

Working with Packages and Patches

q  

You can use the pkginfo command to find out which packages are already installed on the system.

q  

You can use the pkgadd command to install a software package on the system, or to spool (store) the packages on a device such as a directory or a tape.

q  

You can use the pkgchk command to check the accuracy of the installed packages or to check the spooled packages.

q  

You can use the pkgrm command to uninstall the installed packages or to remove the spooled packages.

q  

You can use the patchadd command to find out which patches are already installed on the system and to install new patches.

q  

You can use the patchrm command to uninstall a patch and to restore the previously saved files during the installation of this patch.

q  

You can use the showrev -p command to get the revision information about all the patches installed on the system.
