Chapter 15: MathML Characters

< Day Day Up >

The MathML DTD defines about 2,500 character entities, which cover most characters and symbols that are widely used in mathematics. This chapter contains a set of character tables that show glyphs for all the MathML characters and their position in Unicode.

15.1 Introduction

Each block of Unicode consists of 256 characters arranged in a 16 by 16 grid. The MathML characters are distributed over 22 different blocks of Unicode. Each of these blocks is shown in a separate table in the following pages. By glancing through these tables, you can get a quick overview of all the different types of characters available for use in MathML.

You can determine the hexadecimal numeric character code for each character from the number of the row and column in which that character occurs. For example, the Greek letter Ω occurs in the row numbered 03A and the column numbered 9. Hence, to insert this character, you must type the character entity Ω. The entity names associated with each character are not listed here due to space restrictions. You can look up the entity name for each character at the following URL: http://www.w3.org/Math/characters.
