Dealing with the Conditions

Beyond the message, the media, and the mechanics, the event itself adds another dimension to the planning process. The environment plays a significant role in how the presentation is received by the audience.

For example, when you go to a movie, the lobby, the concession stand, the seats, the size of the screen, and the general conditions of the place will affect how much you enjoy the movie. These environmental elements won't really change from day to day, so they become issues you can learn about in advance of going to that particular theatre.

Now, the audience will also make a difference in how much you enjoy the event, but you can't predict the crowd , unless you already have experience with the general group that frequents that theatre. You have less control (if any) over the audience than you have over the environment.

So, you want to be ready for anything when you present and, believe me, anything can happen, even at the most well-planned events. This chapter looks at the external factors that can impact your performance. I will show you a few techniques and make you aware of some technicalities concerning the conditions of the presentation. These circumstances include

  • Dressing the part

  • Setting the stage

  • Using technology
