Introduction

When the first edition of this book was published in 2000 coinciding with the release of the Microsoft Windows 2000 family of operating systems, we were extremely gratified by the positive reception from network administrators and others interested in Windows 2000 Server. We're very proud of the book and think it's a worthwhile resource for those working to effectively manage a Windows 2000 network—and readers seem to agree. However, many months and three service packs have passed and it's time to bring the book up to date.

The entire book has been revised, but the most important modifications can be found in the following areas:

  • The proxy server chapter has been written anew for Internet Security and Acceleration Server.
  • In the areas of interoperability, the chapter on Macintosh Services has been revised for the Mac OS X. The interoperating with UNIX chapter is all new, reflecting the recently released Services for UNIX (SFU) version 3.
  • In "Managing Software" (Chapter 25), you'll find new sections on application compatibility and deploying service packs.
  • Discussion of TCP/IP administration has been greatly expanded.
  • Additional security information has been included throughout the book, with particular attention given to the Internet Information Services chapters.

We've also tried to correct all the little errors and misprints that creep into even the most carefully edited book without, we hope, introducing new ones.
