Chapter 33 - Performance Monitoring and Tuning

Chapter 33

Performance monitoring is the process of identifying bottlenecks that might be slowing down Microsoft Windows 2000 Server or the network on which it is running. To maximize the performance of a Windows 2000 system, you must be able to recognize bottlenecks wherever they exist and take action to eliminate them. This chapter covers the system and network monitoring tools that Windows 2000 provides, which enable you to detect bottlenecks and tune your system to its optimum performance level. These tools include Event Viewer, System Monitor, and Network Monitor. You should also refer to the section entitled Performance and Memory Tuning in Chapter 6 for basic tuning procedures.
