Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003, Premium Edition, includes Microsoft Windows Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 Standard Edition (ISA Server) on the Premium Technologies CD. ISA Server is a full-featured, robust, and powerful firewall that can play an important role in:
Securing your network from attacks
Managing the use of your company’s Internet resources
Improving the effective bandwidth of your Internet connection
More Info | The installation and configuration of ISA Server as part of Windows Small Business Server is covered in Appendix B, “Installing ISA Server 2000 and SQL Server 2000.” |
Stand-Alone Firewall
The ISA Server 2000 Standard Edition that is included as part of Windows Small Business Server 2003, Premium Edition, can be installed only on the main Windows Small Business Server machine. Although this is sufficient for most small business environments, it does limit your options. For maximum security, your firewall should not reside on the same machine as your domain controller. You can add a server that acts only as a host for ISA Server 2000 (or the new ISA Server 2004, not yet released at the time this book was published) when you want to maximize the overall security of your network. This server will not, however, be managed by the Configure E-Mail and Internet Connection Wizard but instead will need to be separately configured and managed.
