Answers

1.

Interestingly, bad-quality video with good sound is generally perceived as better video than good-quality video with bad sound. Still, strive for good results in both.

2.

With the workspace in Timeline view, select your clip (or clips). Choose Advanced > Extract Audio. This will separate the audio and move it into one of the audio tracks below.

3.

One advantage is that you can use your unlocked audio with different video from the video it was originally synced with, expanding your creative options. The disadvantage, however, is the possibility of losing sync on video that you want to keep in sync. If you have people on camera talking, for example, it looks pretty weird when their lips are not moving with the words.

4.

The workspace in Timeline view gives you space for two tracks of audio. Drag sound clips to either track. You'll have greater control over simultaneous audio by laying the sounds in separate tracks, but you could also overlay audio in a single track.

5.

Record narration using your digital camera as an audio recorder, and import it into iMovie. Or use the microphone in the Audio pane of the Media window to record directly into your iMovie timeline with the built-in mic on your Mac.
