Answers

1.

You may get some argument, but shooting and editing are equally important for making good video.

2.

Your FireWire cable must have a 4-pin connector on one side to plug into your camera and a 6-pin connector on the other end to plug into your Mac.

3.

Five minutes of video requires 1 GBthat's right, 1,000 MB (or so)of hard drive space.

4.

Once your camera is on, in VTR (or VCR) mode, and connected via FireWire, toggle the camera/scissors switch in iMovie to the camera side. This establishes the connection. Now you can use the VCR controls in the iMovie window to control your camera.

5.

Using your iMovie controls, position the tape several seconds before the video you want. Click the Play button to start rolling. Click Import to start capturing. Click Import again (or press the spacebar) to stop the import. The resulting clip or clips will end up in the Clip pane.

6.

If you want to edit, get coverage. Record at least two different shots on any action you're recording.

7.

The two angles of coverage may be close up and far off, in front of and behind, someone looking at something and the object at which they're looking. You can probably think of more.

8.

Use Command-T to chop in the Clip pane.

9.

Drag your clips from the Clip pane to your workspace and arrange them in the order you want.

10.

The Trim tool is available in Timeline view in the workspace.
