Things to Remember

DVD customization is all about details; let's review the most important ones. A menu-based DVD can reference the contents of one sequence only. How it references the content in either the Main menu or Scenes menu is entirely based on how you assign DVD markers to the contents of the sequence. When played from the Scenes menu or Main menu, a clip or segment plays from the marked start point until the end of the sequence unless a Stop marker is detected.

Every selected template has a default maximum number of Main Menu buttons and Scenes Menu buttons. If you plan on customizing the background and elements of a specific template, your choice of the template should be based on the layout, the font styling, and the number of buttons allowed for the respective menus.

To modify the text of a button or text element, you need to double-click on the text to alter it. Double-clicking a button that references a Scene marker or Main Menu marker brings up the DVD Marker dialog associated with that button, and to change the name you simply need to modify the information in the Name field. Double-clicking a simple text element in your menu reveals the straightforward Change Text dialog into which you type the new text.

To change the size of menu buttons, you select the button and drag its boundaries in or out.

Notes

I've created a small tutorial reviewing the more subtle yet important things to remember when working on DVDs with Premiere Pro 2.0. Check out the DVD_Tips.wmv tutorial, located in the Video Tutorials Folder on the book's DVD. When the file loads in Windows Media Player, press Alt+Enter.

Finally, remember that the Effect Controls panel goes hand in hand with modifying DVD menus. If you want to replace the background of a menu or add audio to a menu, make sure you select the menu itself and not any of the button elements that way the background properties of the menu reveal themselves in the Effect Controls panel. If you want to change the button properties of a menu, select the menu, then select the button you want to adjust and its properties will open in the Effect Controls panel.

This chapter concludes the graphics and titling section of the book. The next section, "Advanced Audio Techniques" will guide you through the entire process of recording, editing, adding effects to, and mixing audio using Premiere Pro 2.0.
