Keyboard Shortcuts

If you want to be a Photoshop power user I suggest you learn to use keyboard shortcuts. They can really speed up your workflow. Default keyboard shortcuts are listed in Appendix D. However, if you want to customize shortcuts, you can access the new Keyboard Shortcuts command. You can change existing shortcuts and create new ones.

To modify existing keyboard shortcuts, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Edit Keyboard Shortcuts. The Keyboard shortcut dialog box appears (Figure 23.26). Choose a set of shortcuts from the Set menu. Photoshop Defaults will be the only item in the list until you create a new set.

  2. In the Shortcuts For: list, choose a type of shortcut. The options available are Application Menus, Palette Menus, or Tools. Clicking any one of these options will display a different list of shortcuts.

  3. Choose the command or tool shortcut you want to modify, and a box will appear to the right of the name with the current shortcut displayed. If there is no current shortcut the box will be empty.

  4. Type a new shortcut. After you make changes, the name in the Set menu will have (modified) after it.

You ll see an alert if the keyboard shortcut is already assigned to another command or tool. The alert tells you which command or tool has the shortcut. To assign the shortcut to the new command or tool click the Accept button. After the shortcut has been reassigned, click Undo Changes to cancel the shortcut, or click Accept and Go to Conflict to select the command or tool that has previously been assigned the shortcut to that you can reassign a new one.

The buttons at the right of the dialog box enable you to discard changes.

  • To omit the last saved change click Undo.

  • To reset a new shortcut to the default, click Use Default.

  • To export the displayed set of shortcuts in an HTML browser, click Summarize.

To create a new set of shortcuts click the New Set icon. In the dialog box that appears, name the shortcuts, choose a destination and click the Save button (see Figure 23.27). You can delete a keyboard shortcut or a shortcut set by selecting its name the list and clicking the Delete Shortcut button.
