Migration Considerations

Any migration should be thoroughly analyzed before it takes place to ensure that it is justified and that it will give you the benefits that you expect. Part of this analysis must include your reasons for migrating. The reasons given in this appendix are by no means exhaustive. There are many more reasons that you or your company may need to consider before migrating an application. The reasons may not only need self justification, but may also need to be justified to colleagues and, more likely, a management team. If the migration is not justifiable, the developer should take a second look at the motivation for performing the upgrade. This is not to say that migrating for the sake of migrating is not justified. There is a lot to be gained in learning to migrate an application. And sometimes, the reason to migrate may be the learning itself.
