Chapter 17: Discovery, Compliance, Archive, and Retrieval

Overview

The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance ”it is the illusion of knowledge.

”Daniel J. Boorstin

Many organizations are being required to develop a discovery, compliance, archive, and retrieval (DCAR) system to meet legal or regulatory requirements. (For more on what might happen to you if you don t implement a DCAR system, see Chapter 20, The Law and Your Exchange Environment. ) Although these systems can be complex, and deploying them might be daunting, you might be required to implement some degree of DCAR functionality. Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 itself offers minimal support for DCAR functionality, so you ll probably need a third-party product. In this chapter, I discuss the issues surrounding DCAR systems and how to deliver that functionality with a combination of Exchange tools and third-party products like KVS s Enterprise Vault.
