Study the Adjacent Systems (Process Notes 2.2.1)

For each business event, if you have built an event response model as part of the process of learning the work, then use that model to help you study the adjacent system and the event processing. Otherwise, depending on your knowledge of the event and the complexity of the event, it might help you to sketch an event response model.

Look for business opportunities that show how the product can help to achieve the product purpose within the project constraints.

For each input data flow and output data flow between an adjacent system and a process, consider the system constraints and the work context and ask these questions:

  • What work does the adjacent system do to produce or use the interface?

  • Are we studying enough of the adjacent system to be able to identify business opportunities?

  • Is there any work done by the adjacent system that could be done by the product?

  • Could all or some of the work done by the process be done by the product?

  • Are there any opportunities for helping people to be better at their jobs?

  • What are the aspirations, desires, and concerns of the adjacent systems?
