Wallpaper

Wallpaper is perhaps the lowest-tech requirements tool of all. That, and it's free. Do this: Find a corridor, lobby, or some public area where your stakeholders congregate or pass through. Cover the walls with flip chart paper, brown paper, or anything that is both large and able to be written on. Write topics on sections of the wallpaper. Topics are related to the work and/or the product, and are what you want to know about. Wait a few days.

Our experience is that stakeholders start to write their thoughts, and others become encouraged and add their own comments, additions, suggestions, and so on. You can cheat and seed the wallpaper with some of your own material if comments do not start to appear promptly. The end result is a wealth of material, most of it relevant, partly organized, and gained with almost no effort on your part.

One other thing: The Furniture Police (see DeMarco and Lister's Peopleware for an explanation) will hate it.
