Defragmentation Safety Issues

 < Day Day Up >

Definitely, then, a number of safety issues must be taken into account. Both Windows NT and Windows 2000 have APIs built in specifically to make safe online defragmentation possible. These APIs allow files to be moved safely online while the operating system is running. Defragmenters, therefore, must utilize the APIs or risk blue screens, system crashes, and file corruption. The only safe way to conduct online defragmentation on a Windows 2000 or NT platform is to go through the defragmentation APIs that the operating system supports. A defragmentation program manipulating data inside of the MFT or paging file unbeknown to the operating system or the file system could result in massive data loss.

While software could possibly be written to bypass the operating system in order to defragment the MFT and paging file online, the consensus is that it would be an extremely complex task fraught with danger. It is akin to changing the oil in a car engine while cruising down the freeway. Even if someone could figure out a way to do it, think about the ramifications. It is vital, therefore, that defragmentation tools be closely inspected before purchase. Use defragmenters that comply with the APIs.
