Be Dynamic, Choose Dynamic

 < Day Day Up >

Because dynamic disks do not contain partitions or logical drives, they do not restrict the disk to any kind of volume limit. Hard drives can be divided as the user sees fit and can evolve into very large volumes when small pieces of free space on various disks are combined into one volume. And, because rebooting is unnecessary when configuration changes have been made, dynamic disks are far more flexible than basic disks. In almost all cases, then, one should choose dynamic disks over basic disks, but if it is necessary to run a dual boot system using an earlier Windows operating system, if you are just getting your feet wet with Windows 2000 Server, or you are migrating from NT to Windows 2000, basic disks can be used initially with conversion to dynamic disks being relative simple later.
