Disks Will Fail

 < Day Day Up >

The one great truth in hard drive reliability, as told to me by someone in the HP Server Group, is that disks will fail. This gentleman characterized disks as being like light bulbs. If you are willing to pay more you might end up with one that lasts a little longer, but ultimately you should expect it to fail. The point is to have plenty of spares on hand and to be prepared and ready for that inevitable point when the disks do fail. Bottom line: In a data center of any size, hard drive failure is an almost daily occurrence. So, take steps to secure the data, safeguard against disk failure, and monitor the disks to avert failure before it happens. By doing so, IT moves away from an operating basis of putting out one fire after another to taking a proactive stance of maintaining disk health in such a way as to enhance overall organizational productivity.
