Keyboard Shortcuts

Any function in Maya can have an associated keyboard shortcut, or hotkey. Hotkeys can be huge time-savers, because you can use them rather than go to the menu bar to select a function or command. Many of Maya's functions have hotkeys associated with them by default. As you become more familiar with Maya, you may want to add additional hotkeys.

To create a new hotkey:

1.

Choose Window > Settings/Preferences > Hotkeys (Figure 2.62).

Figure 2.62. You can create a hotkey, or keyboard shortcut, for nearly any command in Maya.

The Hotkey Editor opens.

2.

In the Categories list, click the category name for the command you want to set (Figure 2.63).

Figure 2.63. Commands are organized by category in the Hotkey Editor.

The category name is the same as the name of the menu the command is under.

3.

In the Commands list, select the command for which you want to create a hotkey.

If the command already has a hotkey assigned to it, you'll see it under Current Hotkeys. If you still want to create a new hotkey, delete this preexisting hotkey by selecting it and clicking Remove.

4.

In the Assign New Hotkey section, choose a Key and an optional Modifier for the command (Figure 2.64).

Figure 2.64. If you assign a Modifier as well as a Key,you'll need to press them both to use the hotkey.

5.

Click Assign, and close the Hotkey Editor.
