Page #136 (Chapter 21: Future of Software Process Improvement)

21.1 Trainingless Methods

SPI methods that require little or no training are the future of SPI. Two of our SPI methods, the Personal Software Process SM and Team Software Process SM , cost $26,400 and $37,100 per person. The future of SPI is in methods that can be quickly grasped, utilized, and exploited to begin yielding benefits. The future of SPI is not in pouring tens of thousands of dollars into individuals. Most likely, they have already spent tens of thousands of dollars on education in order to get their jobs.

The future of SPI is in methods that any software engineer, in any domain and at any skill level, can immediately and intuitively grasp. This must occur without requiring tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in training. The benefit of SPI methods that require little or no training is enjoyed not only by the software engineer. This is also good news for the commercial software firm as well as the large, nonprofit organization.

Do organizations need to spend millions of dollars hiring scientists and formulating expensive strategies? Must they spend tens of thousands of dollars training already highly qualified people in the latest SPI method? Or can software organizations focus on their business goals and objectives and minimize the concentration of profits on SPI? Can they rest easy knowing their software engineers are producing the best possible software at the least possible cost?

The answer is obvious. The marketplace is already gravitating toward SPI methods that do not require expensive training and implementation costs. In fact, it is these low-cost market leaders that represent the greatest threat to the leading cost- intensive SPI methods. However, just as the marketplace is resilient to the obstacle of cost, researchers are resilient to the forces of the marketplace. SPI researchers are already creating SPI methods that require little or no training, at little or no cost. ROI analysis can be used to objectively evaluate the alternatives and choose the most effective approach.
