Secure Your Treo Phone

As with any mobile device, security is an important issue with Treo devices. More specifically, phone security is important in that you might want to prevent your phone from being used to make expensive calls if it falls into the wrong hands. Or maybe you need to let someone borrow your Treo to make an emergency call, and you want to make sure the person doesn't abuse the situation. Regardless of your motives, a feature known as Phone Lock makes it possible to limit calls made with your device. When Phone Lock is enabled, your phone can be used only to make emergency calls, such as 911, unless a special lock code is entered. You can also add up to three more emergency numbers that can be dialed when the phone is locked. This makes Phone Lock an ideal feature for allowing a friend or family member to dial only a few preset numbers and nothing more.

To turn on the Phone Lock feature in the Phone application, follow these steps:

1.

Press the Menu button, navigate over to the Options menu, and then scroll down and select the Phone Lock command. The Phone Lock screen appears, as shown in Figure 7.13.

2.

The two check boxes in the Phone Lock screen determine how and when Phone Lock is activated. The first option locks the phone each time the mobile radio powers off, and the second option locks the phone immediately. Although these two options appear as check boxes, they are mutually exclusive, meaning you can select only one at a time. When you initially select one of the check boxes, you're prompted to enter your device's lock code. By default, this code is the last four digits of your mobile phone number. It's a good idea to change the code by tapping the Change Lock Code button; this button appears only when one of the Phone Lock options is set.

3.

You're allowed to specify up to three emergency numbers that can be dialed while the phone is locked. To do this, tap the Advanced button, which appears only when neither Phone Lock option has been set.

4.

When you're finished setting the Phone Lock feature, tap OK to accept the changes and close the Phone Lock screen.

The Phone Lock feature gives you a degree of security in terms of controlling how your Treo is used to make calls. Although you might find it somewhat of an inconvenience on a day-to-day basis, it's a great option to have when other people have access to your device.
