As with most of the PIM data on your Treo, events can be sent to other people (devices) via several different mechanisms. You can use email, SMS, Bluetooth, infrared, and even a Wi-Fi connection (via a Wi-Fi expansion card) to send an event. Sending an event via infrared is a little different from the other approaches, so this section focuses first on sending an event using email, SMS, or Bluetooth. TIP Another command on the Record menu of the Calendar application is Send Category, which is much more powerful than Send Event. The Send Category command sends the entire category of events currently displayed onscreen. So if you want to send all your events to another computer, just select All as the category and issue the Send Category command. To send an event via email, SMS, or Bluetooth in the Calendar application, follow these steps: 1. | Tap the Day View box in the lower-left corner of the screen to switch to Day view; none of the other views supports sending events. Then tap to select the event you'd like to send.
| 2. | Press the Menu button, scroll down the Record menu to the Send Event menu item, and press the five-way navigator. (You can also simply tap the Send Event menu item.) The Send With screen appears. Tap the messaging transport approach you'd like to use, and then tap the OK button.
| 3. | Your device immediately starts looking for discoverable Bluetooth devices. After a few seconds of searching, a list of devices from which you can choose is displayed. Tap to select the device to which you want to send the event, and then tap OK.
TIP Similar to Send Category, the Beam Category command beams the entire category of events currently displayed onscreen. So if you want to beam all your events to another device, just select All as the category and issue the Beam Category command. | 4. | Depending on whether you have established a Bluetooth connection with the device in the past and flagged it as a trusted device, you might have to enter a passkey for the device. The device's owner will supply this information. Other than that, sending the event is mostly automatic.
| Keep in mind that you can also send an event via more traditional channels, such as email and SMS. If you select an option such as email or SMS, you are prompted to specify the "To" address for the event. You also have the option of sending an event via infrared, which is a little different from the other approaches. Most Palm devices support transferring events and other PIM data via infrared because it's the original wireless technology used in PDAs, so you shouldn't have any trouble sharing events with other Treo devices and other devices in the Palm family. To beam an event in the Calendar application via infrared, follow these steps: 1. | Tap the Day View box in the lower-left corner of the screen to switch to Day view; none of the other views supports beaming events. Then tap to select the event you'd like to send.
NOTE When attempting to beam events between a Treo 650 and a Treo 600, some users have reported problems with the devices not seeing each other if the Treo 650 has a username longer than 10 characters. You can change your username by selecting Users from the Tools menu in the Palm Desktop application on your desktop computer. Just make sure you update the new username in any applications that require you to enter the name. | 2. | Press the Menu button, scroll down to the Beam Event menu item, and press the five-way navigator (or simply tap Beam Event). The Beam screen appears, and your device begins looking for another Palm device to beam the event to.
| 3. | When the Beam screen appears, lining up the infrared port on your Treo with the infrared port on the other device is crucial. To do this, aim the top edges of the devices at each other. For example, you can set two Treo devices on a flat surface with their antennas aimed at each other. Keep in mind that infrared ports on Palm devices are designed to work within a range of about three feet, so you must keep the devices fairly close to each other.
| 4. | The person on the other end of the beaming needs to accept the event and specify a category for it. Otherwise, the event is sent with no additional effort on your part.
| If you're on the receiving end of an infrared event transfer, first make sure you have the infrared port of your device turned on. (To do this, launch the Prefs application and tap Power to enable the Beam Receive option.) Then when the beamed event notification arrives, select a category for it and accept it to receive the event. The event is then added to the calendar and appears on the appropriate date. |
