Common Upgrade Issues

The main consideration when upgrading to the Treo 650 is data on your previous device that isn't easily moved to the 650. A lot of your data is no doubt stored as personal information manager (PIM) data on a desktop PIM client, which means you can just synchronize your new Treo to move the data onto it. However, some data isn't included in the synchronization process, and you'll lose this data if you don't transfer it to your new device manually.

Following are the types of data you need to consider moving manually from your old device to your new device, along with a word about applications that might need to be addressed during the transition:

  • Favorites Favorites must be entered manually in the Treo 650. Unfortunately, there's no automatic way to transfer favorites from an older Treo or Palm device, so you must manually re-create each favorite on your new Treo. See "Create and Manage Favorites" in Chapter 7, "Using Your Treo as a Mobile Phone," for more details on how this is done.

  • Call log The call log is not included in the synchronization process. If there are numbers in your old device's call log that you don't have stored as contacts, make sure you create contacts for the numbers and then synchronize your old device. The contacts are then transferred to your Treo 650 upon synchronizing.

  • Email settings The VersaMail application is new to the Treo 650, so any email accounts you had set up on an older Palm device have to be set up anew in VersaMail. Email messages cannot be transferred to your new Treo directly, although you might be able to forward important messages and receive them via the newly created VersaMail account. See "Create an Email Account in VersaMail" in Chapter 8, "Staying in Touch with Email," to find out how to create a new account in VersaMail.

  • Web bookmarks and saved pages Similar to favorites, there's no automatic way to transfer Web bookmarks and saved pages from an older Palm device, so you must re-create them manually on your new Treo. See "Create and Use Bookmarks" and "Save a Web Page for Offline Viewing" in Chapter 10, "Browsing the Wireless Web," to learn how to create bookmarks and save web pages on your Treo 650.

  • Ring tones There's no way to move ring tones automatically from your old Palm device to your new Treo 650. In fact, the only ring tones you even have the option of using on the 650 are MIDI ring tones that you might have acquired for a Treo 600. If you purchased these ring tones from an online service, you should be able to access them again and download them onto your new Treo. If the ring tones are unprotected, just email or beam them to your new Treo. See "Choose, Create, and Download Ring and Alert Tones" in Chapter 3, "Customizing and Personalizing Your Treo," for more information on how to work with ring tones.

  • Pictures Pictures must be moved manually from a Treo 600 to a Treo 650. Click the Treo Pictures icon in the Palm Desktop application to open the Treo Pictures folder and select the pictures to be transferred. Then click Media in Palm Desktop and drag the pictures from the Treo Pictures folder to the Media window. Perform a HotSync operation to finish transferring the pictures.

  • Expense data Unlike other Palm devices, the Treo 650 doesn't include a built-in Expense application. You'll need to export and save expense data from your old device if you plan to keep it.

    Tip

You can also store your pictures on a memory card using your old device and then just switch the memory card to your Treo 650.

  • Legacy applications Applications you used on an earlier Palm device might not be supported on the Treo 650. Be sure to check with the publisher of any third-party applications you use to check whether there is a new version that's compatible with the Treo 650.

If you keep these issues in mind as you upgrade to the Treo 650, you shouldn't have too much trouble migrating to your new device.
