DESIGNING FOR DIRECTORIES

Directories are differentiated from search engines in that real people, instead spiders and software, directories categorize the information contained in their indexes. Each directory has an in-depth submission form which the website owner must fill out and submit before the website can be listed in the directory.

When filling out a submission form, keep in mind that directories have real humans with inquiring minds working behind the scene. The better you present your information the better chance you have of getting your website listed in the directory.

Here are some tips to help you in the directory submission process:

  • It is vital that you carefully consider and choose your 25-word description and category that you want your website to be listed under. Once it is submitted it’s very difficult to change your mind later.
  • You should endeavor to find the best category listing for your website. To do this, go to that directory, search for a word or phrase you hope would be most used to find your website. The resulting category is the category for which you should submit your website.
  • Provide an accurate, concise description of your website — using 25 words or less is the key to success. It is interesting though that if your website has graphics or photos and you indicate that fact in the submission form, your website will have a slight edge over other similar sites without graphics or photos.

Remember, directories are compiled by thinking humans, so a good site, with good content, has a better chance of being listed than its lesser contemporaries.
