GLOBALIZATION

The Web is the first wave of a pure global economy. That means opportunity — to take advantage of a rapidly expanding global trade and the ensuing revenue stream. The task is deciding how a specific business can fit into the new global economy.

Many new websites receive at least one international order on the first day they are up and running — amazing proof that e-commerce generates a global customer base. Imagine from just one location, a business can reach a market anywhere in the world, not just in a specific state or country.

One barrier in this rosy picture is the average website owner’s lack of understanding of worldwide taxes and tariffs. Integrating enabling modules into a commerce software package could be a first step in untangling this confusing issue. Also, websites need to keep costs down and ensure fulfillment efficiencies in the areas of tariffs, freight, and sales taxes.

All international e-commerce customers have the same questions – “If I buy this product from this site, will I pay a duty on it when it crosses the international border? What are the shipping costs? Can I avoid paying sales taxes?” If you are serving an international customer base, devote a web page to international customers with a complete, easy to understand explanation. Be prepared!

So, dear readers, go out there and fight the good battle. The Internet and the Web have an investment community and others who realize their value, and governments who right now are silently waiting in the wings to see how this new phenomenon shakes out. However, time is running out. Everyone wants a piece of the pie. Make your plan and carve out your piece of the Web — it’s the future.
