Foreign direct investment in the city dropped by 5.1 per cent in 2000. Total contracted investment was US$269.93 million and there were 81 approved FDI projects (see Table 7.46.4).

Foreign investment came from 13 countries and regions . The leading sources were: Hong Kong (US$116.26 million in 50 projects), Taiwan Province (US$11.07 million in 10 projects), Singapore (US$72.90 million in 5 projects), British Virgin Islands (US$45.31 million in 4 projects) and Australia (US$1.03 million in 3 projects)
In 2000, foreign-invested enterprises (FIEs) had a total output value of RMB15.244 billion, up by 11.9 per cent on 1999 and contributing 18.7 per cent to Shantou's gross industrial output value. The sales/ business revenue was RMB14.76 billion, a growth of 11 per cent and export value totalled US$710 million, up by 5.7 per cent from that of the previous year.
