Foreign trade


Shenzhen's total foreign trade increased by 26.80 per cent in 2000, from US$50.428 billion in 1999 to US$63.943 billion. 68.53 per cent of the total trade value came from exports, the total value of which was US$34.557 billion, up by 22.51 per cent over US$28.208 billion in 1999. Total export value was equivalent to 171.34 per cent of the city's total GDP (RMB166.524 billion or US$20.136 billion), accounting for 37.59 per cent of the total export value of Guangdong Province (US$91.920 billion) and 13.87 per cent of the total export value of the country (US$249.200 billion). Shenzhen ranked first among large- to medium- sized cities in China.

Export of primary goods came to US $ 1.399 billion, 4.05 per cent of the total export value. Export of manufactured goods was worth US$33.158 billion, or 95.96 per cent.

Total import value was US$29,386 billion, an increase of 32.25 per cent over 22.219 billion in 1999. The key import category was telecommunications equipment and devices, which accounted for 35.79 per cent of the city's total import value. Other key imports and their respective shares in the total import value were: plastics (9.48 per cent), machinery (6.76 per cent), ferrous metal (5.92 per cent), paper and paper products (4.44 per cent), textiles (2.46 per cent) and industrial chemicals (2.24 per cent). Japan was the largest supplier of Shenzhen's imports (see Table 7.44.3).
