Located in Guangdong Province's coastal region, Shenzhen is the country's first Special Economical Zone (SEZ), established in 1979. The city consists of six districts, of which four are within the SEZ. Shenzhen is bordered by the New Territories of Hong Kong in the south, Wutong Mountain in the north, Dapeng Bay in the east and Houhai Bay in the west and it has a total area of 2,035 square kilometres. The population is 4.6876 million. Over 20 years of rapid economic growth have brought Shenzhen to the forefront of the major Chinese cities in terms of overall economic strength. The city is the fastest developing in China. Between 1980 to 2001, its annual increase in GDP averaged 29.5 per cent, in industrial output value 45.4 per cent, and in import and export value 39.1 per cent.
