Beihai has ample natural resources. The waters of the Beibu Gulf are replete with marine products, including hairtail, cuttlefish, prawn, crab, squid and seahorse. In addition, the area contains rich deposits of ilmenite and quartz sand as well as oil. The Beibu Gulf is one of the six largest oil and gas basins in China. Proven reserves of petroleum amount to 22.56 million tonnes and reserves of natural gas are 35 billion cubic metres. The Beibu Gulf on the border of Beihai is one of the four well-known fishing grounds in China. The city benefits from the sea not only in fishing but also in pearl farming. It is the hometown of the world-famous Southern Pearls. For the tourism industry, Beihai has beautiful beaches, islands and mangrove forests. Beihai Silver Beach has been approved by the State Council as one of 11 State Tourism and Holiday Zones.
