Beihai is situated on the southern tip of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, facing the Beibu Gulf and bordered by the sea on three sides. It has a total area of 3,337 square kilometres and a population of 1.45 million. In April 1984, Beihai was approved by the State Council as one of the 14 coastal cities to implement further opening policies to the outside world. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.43.1.
