Fuzhou is a coastal city in south- eastern China, on the lower reaches of the Minjiang River. The terrain slopes from north-west to south-east. The Taiwan Straits separate Fuzhou from Taiwan Province, which is only 68 nautical miles away at the shortest distance. Fuzhou is a famous historic and cultural city and an open coastal port city. Its coastline of 1137 kilometres is one-third of that of the whole province . The Minjiang River flows through the city. Fuzhou is the provincial capital of Fujian, occupying a total area of 11,968 square kilometres and has a population of 5.89 million. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.40.1.
