Nantong has well-developed port facilities. Cargo transhipment is undertaken for the provinces and cities along the Yangtze River and its tributaries and shipping lines link the port with Japan, Korea, Australia, Europe, Russia and Africa and a direct shipping service has been set up with Europe. A communications network consisting of water, land and air routes has been developed. Nantong Harbour is one of China's top 10 ports and Nantong Xindong Airport has flights to both domestic and international destinations. The city is also well connected to other parts of the province by high quality highways. A railway running through the city is currently being built to improve the city's land transportation capabilities.
