Foreign trade
In 2000, the city's total foreign trade value came to US$638.96 million, up by 32.08 per cent against US$483.77 million in 1999.
Total export value was US$233.95 million, up by 21.84 per cent over US$192.07 million in 1999, an equivalent of 6.8 per cent of the city's GDP (RMB28.719 billion or about US$3.46 billion) and 7.14 per cent of the total export value of Hebei province . Export of primary products amounted to US$104.66 million, accounting for 44.74 per cent of total export value, and for manufactured products US$174.76 million, or 74.7 per cent.
Exports were destined for 78 countries and regions , mainly in Asia and Europe. Japan was first among the top five export markets (see Table 7.33.2) by taking US$190.9 million worth of goods from the city, which was 38.85 per cent of the city's total export value. The city was fairly dependent on its key export markets and 76.01 per cent of its export revenue came from the top five.

Import value increased by 38.82 per cent, from US$291.76 million in 1999 to US$405.52 million in 2000. Import of primary goods amounted to US$175.01 million and of manufactured products US$230 million, accounting for 43.16 per cent and 56.72 per cent respectively of the city's total value of import.
Imports came from 25 countries and regions. South Korea and the USA ranked first and second in the city's top five import markets (see Table 7.33.3). Interestingly, Ecuador and the Philippines took the third and fourth positions ; this is believed to be because of the large quantity of bananas imported by the city.
