Situated at the north- eastern end of Hebei Province, with the Yanshan Mountain to the north, the Bohai Sea to the south and Liaoning Province to the east, Qinhuangdao has a coastline of 113 kilometres, a total area of 7,523 kilometres, of which the city proper makes up 363 square kilometres. Its population is 2.69 million. It is one of the 14 open coastal cities designated by the State Council in 1984. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.33.1.
