Situated in the southern part of north-western China, on the north-east of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, Qinghai is named after its famous Qinghai Lake. The Qaidam Basin in the north-west of the province is surrounded by the Kunlun, Altun and Qilian mountain ranges. A significant part of the province lies more than 3,000 metres above sea level. The Yangtze and Yellow rivers rise in the highlands. The province's total area is 722,300 square kilometres and it has a population of 5.231 million. The provincial capital is Xining.
