Sichuan Province is situated along the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The eastern part of the province is a basin, surrounded by the Daliang, Qionglai, Daba, Wuahan and Emei mountains. The west of the province consists of snow-capped mountains. Mountains account for 49.8 per cent of the total area of the province, plateaux 29 per cent, hilly areas 18.6 per cent and plains 2.6 per cent. The total area is 485,000 square kilometres and the population is 86.396 million. The provincial capital is Chengdu. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.23.1.
