Foreign trade
In 2000, the import and export value of Chongqing Municipality increased by 47.53 per cent, from US$1.21 billion in 1999 to US$1.785 billion. Total export value doubled from US$490 million in 1999 to US$995 million in 2000. Export was equivalent to 5.18 per cent of the municipal GDP of RMB 159 billion (US$19.2 billion) and 0.4 per cent of the total export value of the whole country.
Very small amounts of primary goods, US$41.78 million or 4.2 per cent of the total export value, were exported from the city in 2000. Export of manufactured products, on the other hand, comprised 95.8 per cent of the total export value, amounting to US$953.44 million.
Interestingly, Vietnam was first among the top five major export destinations, taking 27.84 per cent of the city's export (see Table 7.22.2). This was largely attributed to the export of motorcycles to the country; Chongqing is a leading motorcycle producer in China.

Import experienced a moderate increase of 9.75 per cent to US$790 million. Total import in 1999 was US$720 million. The composition of imports resembled the pattern of export, with the import of primary products taking a small share of 5.68 per cent or US$44.88 million, whereas the import of manufactured products took a share as high as 94.32 per cent (US$745.37 million).
The top five import markets (see Table 7.22.3) supplied 83.27 per cent of the import total, and over 58 per cent of the city's import came from Japan.
