Foreign trade
Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region achieved 16.2 per cent growth in its total foreign trade value, from US$1.753 billion in 1999 to US$2.038 billion in 2000. The total export value reached US$1.493 billion, an increase of 19.7 per cent over US$1.247 billion in 1999. Export trade was responsible for 6.1 per cent of the region's GDP and accounted for 0.6 per cent of the whole country's total export value.
Export of primary products amounted to US$236 million and export of manufactured products came to US$1257 million, accounting for 15.81 per cent and 84.19 per cent respectively of the region's total export value.
Exports were destined for 222 countries and regions , while the top five destinations (see Table 7.20.2) took a share of 63.3 per cent in the region's total export value. The province 's geographical proximity to Vietnam accounts for its high position in the top five.

Total import value was US$545 million, up by 7.6 per cent over US$506 million in 1999. Import of primary products amounted to US$170 million and import of manufactured products US$375 million, accounting for 31.19 per cent and 68.81 per cent respectively of the region's total import value. The top five import markets (see Table 7.20.3) had a collective share of 49.12 per cent in the region's total import, down from 67.85 per cent in 1995.
