With Beibu Gulf to its south and Vietnam to its southwest, Guangxi is situated in the western part of south China. Mountains and hilly areas account for 25 per cent, plains 25 per cent and rocky terrain about 50 per cent of the total area. With rivers criss- crossing the land and numerous underground streams, the scenery of Guilin is known as 'the best under heaven'. The total area is 230,000 square kilometres with a population of 47.88 million. The regional capital is Nanning. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.20.1.
