Hubei is situated in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River in central China. Topographically it is an incomplete basin with heights on the eastern , western and northern fringes forming a horseshoe round the central and southern regions . The central area is dotted with lakes and the western part is formed by a chain of mountains including Wudang. The total area is 185,900 square kilometres and the population is 59.75 million. The provincial capital is Wuhan. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.17.1.
