Henan Province is situated in the central plain on the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River. It slopes from the north-west to the south-east. Mountains and hills constitute respectively 26.6 per cent and 17.76 per cent of the total area, plains and basins make up 55.7 per cent and the vast plain in the east is part of the North China Plain. The province has a total area of 167,000 square kilometres with a population of 95.55 million and the provincial capital is Zhengzhou. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.16.1.
