Shandong Province lies in the lower reaches of the Yellow River on China's eastern coast . The province covers a peninsula and hinterland. The peninsula stretches between the Bohai Gulf and Yellow Sea and faces Liaodong Peninsula in the north. Mountains and hilly land in the central and southern parts of the province and on the peninsula account for 35 per cent of the province's total area. The province has a coastline of more than 3,200 kilometres and a number of fine ports. Its total area is 156,700 square kilometres and its population is 90.41 million. The provincial capital is Jinan. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.15.1.
