The province lies in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River . It is surrounded by mountains, with the Wuyi and Huaiyau mountains on the east and the Mufu and Luoxiao mountains on the west. There are many rivers and streams in the province. Poyang Lake is the largest fresh-water lake in China. The total area is 166,900 square kilometres and the population is 41.40 million by the end of 2000. The provincial capital is Nanchang. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.14.1.
