2000 saw a sharp increase in Shanghai's total trade, which came to US$54.710 billion, up by 47.72 per cent on 1999 (US$38.604 billion).

Total export rose by 34.97 per cent, from US$18.785 billion in 1999 to US$25.354 billion in 2000. Export was the main contributor to Shanghai's economy and its value in 2000 was equal to 46.2 per cent of Shanghai's GDP. Shanghai's export also contributed 10.2 per cent of the country's total export value, ranking it third in the nation.

Among the key export markets, Japan came first while the USA took the second place in 2000. Over 46 per cent of the city's export went to Japan and the USA in the year. The top five export markets (see Table 7.10.2) contributed 63.3 per cent of the total export earnings.

Shanghai's import increased by a rate of 48.12 per cent in 2000, registering a total value of US$29.356 billion (US$19.818 billion in 1999). Imports were largely manufactured products, totalling US$25.875 billion, or 88.14 per cent of the total import value. Import of primary products accounted for only 11.86 per cent of the city's total import, with a value of US$3.481 billion.

The level of dependence on the top five import markets was reduced from 72.17 per cent in 1995 to
60.6 per cent in 2000. However, Japan remained the city's largest supplier of imports, with the USA second.

These two countries supplied 37.7 per cent of the city's imports in 2000 (see Table 7.10.3).
