Shanghai is a transportation hub of central China. It is a well-known international city conveniently connected by land, air and water to other parts of the country and to more than 160 countries and regions throughout the world. The port of Shanghai is the largest in China, having over 19 international container shipping lines. Shanghai is linked to the inland provinces via the Yangtze River, which reaches as far as Chongqing. Shanghai port has more than 100 berths, half of which are deep-water berths for ships of 10,000 tons and above. It runs regular routes to Western Europe, the United States, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong and other less frequent routes to more than 400 ports around the globe. The railway network consists of trunk lines connecting Beijing, Hangzhou and other major cities in the country. Shanghai is China's aviation centre , having two airports “ Hongqiao and Pudong “ in the city. The two airports have 300 air routes and provide flight services to 88 domestic and overseas destinations. Shanghai has well- developed telecommunications services connecting it with over 100 cities in China and many cities abroad. There are more than 50 institutions of higher learning and 700 research institutes. The city has well-developed banking, insurance and commercial services, many of which are owned by foreign institutions.
