Foreign trade
The year 2000 saw a remarkable increase of 38.53 per cent in Liaoning's total import and export value, to US$19.022 billion, compared with the total value in 1999 of US$13.731 billion. Total export value was US$10.848 billion, up by 32.39 per cent against US$ 8.2 billion in 1999. This is equal to 19.2 per cent of the provincial GDP in that year, which was RMB466.83 billion (US$56.39 billion), ranking Liaoning seventh in the country in 2000.
The province exported US$3 billion worth of primary products, 27.6 per cent of the total export value. Export of manufactured products constituted the majority of these, amounting to US$7.85 billion and representing 72.4 per cent of the total value of export.
Although the province exported to 170 countries and regions , the top five export destinations (see Table 7.6.2) accounted for over 70 per cent of its total export value.

The growth of the province's import rate in 2000 surpassed that of its export. The total value of import registered a phenomenal growth of 47.79 per cent, totalling US$8.174 billion (US$5.531 billion in 1999). Import of primary products came to US$2.232 billion, accounting for 27.3 per cent of the total import value, while 72.7 per cent were manufactured products, the total value of these coming to US$5.942 billion. Imports originated from 110 countries and regions with 68 per cent of these coming from the top five markets (see Table 7.6.3).
